Homophobe became the head of the Ural State Theatre

Singer of ‘Russian Chansons’ Aleksander Novikov, famous for his aggressive homophobia, has been appointed artistic director of the Ural State Theatre in Ekaterinburg.
His first step in his new post was to remove the children’s musical ‘The Blue Puppy’, based on a well-known Soviet cartoon, from the theatre’s repertoire.
‘As the new artistic director, Alksander Novikov has stayed true to himself and still intends to eradicate any seditious material with even the slightest hint toward same-sex love. He therefore removed the children’s show ‘The Blue Puppy’ from his repertoire. This is hardly surprising given the show’s title!’ - from Komsomol’skaya Pravda in Ekaterinburg, on June 24th. (In reference to the fact that the word for ‘blue’ in the musical’s title is the Russian equivalent for the word ‘gay’)
‘This production needed to be taken down decisively’ - declared Aleksander Novikov - ‘Judge for yourselves: how can such a thing be put on the stage? The show is simply saturated with pedophiliac and homoerotic references; it does not fulfill the requirements of the contemporary stage. It is disgraceful when a grown man approaches a small boy, strokes his head and says: ‘Now then, my little blue one, come with me!’’.
‘I am simply a patriot and want to help our State Theatre become the best in the country’, - Novikov told the reporters.
The singer is famous for his homophobic statements. Back in 2007 he expressed his disappointment at not being able to make it to Moscow for the dispersal of the Gay Pride march: ‘I would have gladly bloodied their gay muzzles.’
